The Every Other Day Diet Experiment 2016

The holidays get us every year. Parties, food, boozin, its seems like its a month of missed workouts, feeling hungover from food and booze. 

Often I see people posting how the New Year resolutions don't work and we should maybe not even think of making that list of goals that will most likely be abandoned by the end of January. For me I love the promise of everything feeling new. Always updating my goals list, checking off the small milestones to reach the end prize and yet January 1st still has this promise of shiny new goals to be laid out and planned for. Since weight loss is usually a topic of interest, lets go.

Last year we did an experiment with 21 days to shredded. Some of you really jumped in and saw some changes, I understand that people like having their meal plans laid out and given to them so they don't have to think, so much thinking. The trouble is one plan doesn't fit all. We can all be so hormonally different, how we deal with life and stress and what we do with that all matter when it comes to choosing fuel for our lives. 

This month lets try Every Other Day EOD diet or Alternate Day Fasting ADF. In the past I've run some experiments with the 5:2 and had some very successful people but like every diet that you start there must be a plan on getting to maintenance  and letting your body reset.

The things I like about EOD/ADF you can make healthy food choices all the time but if you "slip up" on a feast day because a coworker brought cereal covered California donuts all is not lost. As well if its a fast day you have already planned your perfect 500 or 600 calorie meal and can easily just say "I'm fasting" and be done with it. What if, lets say, you end up invited to a surprise dinner party, its a fasting day, nothing is lost just fast then next day. Its fluid and easy you just have to be ok with making adjustments along the way.

From what I understand the trickiest of parts is going to happen in the first 10 days. There is an adjustment period and if you have not fasted it can be challenging. Drinking warm tea, black coffee or my favorite warm water with lemon can help with the hunger and if you crave sugar good old glutamine to the rescue. I know what you are thinking "can I drink my wine?" if its a feast day yes but its recommend to stick to one serving but hey, its 4 weeks I think we can give our liver a break. On your fasting day every calorie counts so its not advisable to consume any beverages with calories, what a waste, I like to eat all the food. 

In searching the inter web there are lots of so called healthy 500 calorie options. Beware, what most people think is "healthy" makes me a little sad. If I'm going to chow down on 500 calories of food it would look something like this. 

A frittata made with 4 eggs, 3 oz tomato, 1 oz goat cheese, 2 cups arugula served with 1 pear and 1 tablespoon peanut butta and a warm cupatea. This = 541 calories, 30g carbs, 34g fat, 35g protein. 

Maybe a 6oz turkey ground served with 2 cups broccoli and a 1/2 cup of rice Maria Sharps hot sauce and on the side a dark chocolate covered graham cracker (don't judge me). =523 calories, 47g carbs, 20g fat, 36g protein. 

A Big Ass Salad with 4 cups of romaine, 6 oz of chicken, 1/2 a medium avocado, 1 oz blue cheese, 2 celery stalks with 1 tablespoon peanut butter. = 515 calories 21g carbs, 35g fat, 55g protein. 

If you are lazy you could just order food from Power Supply and not have to think about your 500 calorie day. They have several options between 500-600 calories.
